This 7-day educational adventure is organized by Green Edventures Tours.
The program is centered entirely on the extraordinary marine ecosystems of the Sea of Cortez—one of the most biologically rich seas on Earth. Beginning in La Paz, the gateway to this vibrant marine environment, students ease into the experience with an overnight stay, allowing time to settle in, connect as a group, and prepare for the immersive days ahead.
From La Paz, the journey moves into the field with three nights at a remote island basecamp on Espíritu Santo Island, a protected UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, the ocean becomes the classroom. Students engage in hands-on marine science—snorkeling over coral and rocky reefs, conducting REEF fish surveys, kayaking along dramatic coastlines, and observing wildlife in its natural habitat. Encounters may include sea lions, seabirds, reef fish, and, in season, juvenile whale sharks measuring 15–20 feet. Living beachside under the stars, students experience total immersion in nature while building field skills, curiosity, and confidence.
After camp, the program returns to La Paz for two nights focused on connecting field experiences to human impacts and ocean stewardship. Students visit a marine mammal museum to deepen their understanding of regional biodiversity and conservation, and explore a working pearl farm to learn about aquaculture and the history of pearl cultivation in the Sea of Cortez.
This program is designed to move from experience to understanding—first immersing students in the wild marine environment, then helping them make sense of what they’ve observed. Along the way, students strengthen connections with their peers, and gain a deeper appreciation for the role they can play in protecting our oceans.

Flights arrive at Los Cabos, International Airport between 11am-1:30pm. Our team will be there to greet you.
After a full day of travel, students arrive at the Los Cabos International Airport and begin their 2.5 hour transfer north along the Baja Peninsula. En route to La Paz, the group stops for an authentic local lunch—an opportunity to relax, refuel, and get a first taste of the region’s culture and cuisine.
Upon arrival in La Paz, students check into their hotel and have time to settle in and unwind. The afternoon is intentionally low-key, with time to enjoy the pool, recharge, and ease into the rhythm of the trip before the adventure ahead. Later, the group gathers for introductions and an overview of the program, setting expectations and building excitement for the days to come.
In the evening, students visit the dive shop where they are fitted for wetsuits and snorkeling gear—an important step in preparing for upcoming adventure in the Sea of Cortez. The day concludes with a group dinner in La Paz, followed by a return to the hotel for a restful night’s sleep before heading out to the island basecamp the next day.
We have a few hotels to choose from. The hotel will be provided when the trip is confirmed. Students will stay 2-3 per room in their own beds. The hotels we partner with are 3-star.
Breakfast at the hotel and early departure to the marina. From there, we transfer 26 miles by boat across the sparkling waters of the Sea of Cortez to the wild and remote Espíritu Santo Island. As we cruise along, there’s a good chance of spotting dolphins playing in the wake and seabirds gliding overhead. Approaching the island feels almost surreal—clear turquoise water, untouched beaches, and striking red rock cliffs create an unforgettable first impression. This remote, protected island will be our home for the next few nights, where students will be fully immersed in the rhythms of the natural world.
Students will meet in the dining tent for hot lunch prepared by the chef. Later, participants will learn basic snorkeling skills in the shallow water right by camp.
As you float above the reef, you’ll be surrounded by schools of graceful angelfish, snappers, and the brilliantly colored parrotfish. Peer into the rocky crevices and discover hidden treasures like blennies, eels, and a variety of hard and soft corals.
Students don’t just learn about marine ecosystems—they actively investigate them. Using their field workbook as a guide, they will conduct reef fish surveys, observe sea lion behavior, and ask and test their own scientific questions in real time. Through hands-on data collection and analysis, students explore how species interact, how energy moves through ecosystems, and how environmental changes impact biodiversity. By the end of their time at camp, students not only deepen their understanding of marine biology and ecology, but also leave with a stronger sense of connection to the natural world—and a clear understanding of how their choices can contribute to protecting it.
Our first adventure is a big highlight for all our groups. We board the boat for an 30 min ride to Los Isolates Sea Lion Colony. This sea lion colony has has divers and snorkelers swimming with the residents for over 30 years and there is a reason why people keep coming back. Participants will hop in the wild world of these "underwater dogs." Each experience is different, but it's highly likely to have playful juveniles come up to you performing entertaining acrobatics, - their natural behaviors.
Set out on a cross-island nature walk through the El Cardonal (cardón cactus) forest on Espíritu Santo Island, where students explore the unique plant life that thrives in this desert island environment. Along the way, they’ll learn how native species have adapted to intense sun, limited water, and salty conditions. Keep an eye out for ground squirrels darting through the brush and small anole lizards basking on rocks. The hike leads across the island to the opposite shore, where dramatic cliffs rise above the sea—offering a striking contrast to the calm bays and a powerful reminder of the island’s rugged beauty.
After breakfast, we say goodbye to our island camp crew and begin our journey back toward La Paz. Along the way, we keep watch for one of the most incredible encounters in the Sea of Cortez—whale sharks that migrate seasonally into the Bay of La Paz. With a designated time slot provided by the marine park, we head out in search of these gentle giants. Once spotted, the boat captain carefully positions us in their path, and when the dive master gives the signal, students slip into the water to snorkel alongside juvenile whale sharks, typically measuring around 15–20 feet in length. Swimming next to these massive yet peaceful animals is both humbling and unforgettable. Although whale sharks can grow up to 60 feet long—the largest fish in the world—the individuals we encounter here are juveniles, feeding on plankton, the smallest members of the marine food chain.
We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch on the boat before returning to La Paz. Back on land, we check into our hotel where hot showers and comfortable beds await—a welcome treat after several days of beach camping. The afternoon is yours to relax, recharge, and reflect on the incredible experiences of the past few days before we head out to shop for souvenirs and dinner in La Paz.
Note: Whale shark snorkeling is regulated by local authorities and runs from November 1 to May 1. Access depends on weather conditions and the number of whale sharks present in the bay. If numbers are low, snorkeling slots may be limited; if winds are too strong, the port may close. For programs outside of whale shark season, or if snorkeling is not permitted, an alternative activity will be arranged.
Before dinner, students can use this time to wrap up any projects and complete their workbooks.
Overnight in La Paz for two nights.
Students will stay in a 3-star hotel, 2-3 students per room in their own bed. The hotel name will be provided when the tour is confirmed .
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll dive into a day of science and culture in La Paz. Our first stop is the Whale Museum, where we’ll learn about the marine megafauna of the region. The museum offers fascinating exhibits on the biology and behavior of whales and other large marine animals, as well as the vital role of rescue and conservation efforts in protecting these majestic creatures and their ecosystems. It’s a deep dive into the natural history of Baja’s marine life, sure to inspire a new appreciation for the oceans.
Next, we’ll head to the La Paz Pearl Farm for an immersive experience in one of the region’s most unique cultural traditions. You’ll learn about the meticulous process of cultivating Sea of Cortez pearls, some of the rarest and most stunning pearls in the world. As we tour the farm, we’ll walk along floating platforms where you can observe oysters in their natural habitat and gain insight into the science behind pearl formation. The tour also connects you to the rich history of pearl diving, once a flourishing industry in Baja. You might even witness a live pearl harvest, showcasing the farm’s commitment to sustainable practices that ensure the preservation of the marine environment. The experience concludes with a visit to the showroom, where you can admire the finished pearls—each a symbol of the region’s cultural heritage and natural beauty.
Evening: We’ll return to to the hotel or have dinner at a local restaurant in town. Student will finish up workbooks and any outstanding projects.
The final day always comes too soon. Our team feels it just as much as you will—saying goodbye is never easy after sharing a place we care so deeply about. Over the course of this journey through the Sea of Cortez, we’ve explored, learned, and experienced something truly special together. More than anything, we hope you leave with a genuine connection to this wild ocean and a sense of responsibility to help protect it.

This camp isn’t just a place to sleep—it’s your gateway to one of the most extraordinary marine ecosystems on Earth: the Sea of Cortez.
Set on a remote, uninhabited island, this is the only way to truly experience multiple days immersed in this wild environment. There are no hotels, no crowds, and no day-trip time limits—just full access to the rhythms of the ocean and the landscapes that make this region so remarkable.
From this base, you’ll explore pristine bays, snorkel in vibrant marine habitats, kayak along dramatic volcanic coastlines, and spend time in places that most travelers only glimpse briefly—if at all.
Very few people ever get the opportunity to live on this island, even for a short time. Waking up to the sound of the sea, watching the light change across the desert and water, and experiencing the quiet isolation of this protected place is what makes this program so different.
It’s not just a visit—it’s a rare chance to be fully present in a wild, living ecosystem.

Talk to your students about this tour and why you want them to go with you!
From beginning to end, everything is organized, affordable, communication is quick and easy, and the trip is well planned with plenty of activities as well as downtime. I will travel with them again and recommend that every teacher looking to take a group of high school students on a trip that has both fun and educational aspects does the same. Green Edventures is the best!
– Shannon S., Baja Tour
Our trip was one of the most impactful experiences I've ever had for so many reasons- the location, the wildlife, the deep knowledge of the on-the-ground partners, the authentic learning and service opportunities, the emphasis on safety and connection for our students, and how smoothly everything went is truly exemplary.
– Lindsay R., Galapagos Tour
In the past 4 years I have been on 6 trips with Green Edventure and have one planned for this summer and next. If you are a person who values the outdoors, biology, and ecology and wishes to instill these same values into your family, friends, and/or students then look no further. Green Edventures is in a league of its own from an educational, fun, and ecotourism standpoint. My family, students and myself have had such wonderful and enlightening experiences through these trips!
─ Todd K., Baja, Alaska, Trinidad & Tobago and Galapagos Islands Tours
We have taken a group of Nebraska students to Baja with GE for 4 years. It has always been an awesome experience!! The students love the hands-on approach. They bring memories back that will never be lost. We always feel that what they have learned and experienced about the ecology will make them better informed naturalist and voters.
─ Karen G., Baja Tour
Thank you very much for all of your hard work in organizing a fantastic trip for my students. I am very appreciative. You did a great job. Every student loved you, Courtenay and the rest of the gang.
─ D. Hoffman, Trinidad & Tobago Tour
I took a small group to Alaska with Green Edventures in 2009. It was an amazing experience. I have not traveled with students for many years but when my family situation slows down and I make the commitment, I know I will use Green Edventures.
─ Dawn P., Alaska Tour
I still dream about the trip! Amazing memories I want to go back!
─ Brittany P., Costa Rica Tour
First, we genuinely were cared for- in terms of our dietary restrictions, personal comfort, and needs. There's a difference between feeling cared for and actually being cared for. Definitely was the latter with Green Ed. Second, we were made to feel safe. Driving was extremely safe and efficient, all local restaurants were well-chosen, and all excursions were done with regard for our physical and emotional safety. Third, there is great knowledge of the wildlife and the ecosystems. Because local guides and establishments are utilized, great care is taken to introduce students to the local flora and fauna in a knowledgeable manner with expertise. In total, I would certainly recommend Green Ed for any future trip I was taking to a region where I had little (to no) experience. The staff and contracted partners are completely knowledgeable and trustworthy. It was truly an unforgettable experience for everyone in the group (including me, the instructor).
─ Matthew F., Baja Tour
Awesome trip!
─ Tristan T., Galapagos Islands Tour
Wow, What an amazing experience for my students and chaperones. This is my 3rd time taking a large group of students on an Eco-Tour out of the country, but the first time with Green Edventures. The difference in my trip to Roatan compared to the others in value, experience, and safety is beyond compare! 10/10 experience.
– Jim N., Roatan, Honduras
My son loved this trip! He had quite the adventure and learned a lot.
