Walk through forests of giant daisy trees, meet ancient turtles, wander through lava tubes, snorkel with dinosaurs, and enter a world where animals have no fear of people. This isn’t a fantasy, it’s the Galapagos.
Join us on a educational adventure in the Galapagos Islands! Daily adventures included educational hikes, snorkeling trips, and visits to educational centers to introduce students to biogeography of the Galapagos. Everyday is led by a local naturalist guide who will teach you about the unique species that live on these remote islands and their special adaptations which help them survive here.
Like Darwin, students will investigate various habitats of three of the Galapagos Islands from highland forest, lowland deserts, beaches and mangroves to discover the species of these special islands. Students will explore Santa Cruz, North Seymore, and Isabela Islands.
Wildlife we anticipate to see include: two species of giant tortoise, marine iguana, land iguanas, various sea turtles, white tipped sharks, eagle rays, flamingos, blue-footed boobies, Darwin's finches, and possibly penguins.

Trip Development
Below is a sample itinerary and estimated budget based on 10 participants. The itinerary advertised here, order of activities and specific details are subject to change based on availability and practical considerations. Once payment is received, Green Edventures will confirm availability with our partner's and block group airfare (if applicable) to lock down activities and lodging.
Here are Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) aligned with the educational trip to the Galapagos Islands:
**Disciplinary Core Ideas:**
1. **LS2.A: Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems**
- Students will explore the diverse ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands, examining the interdependent relationships between organisms and their environments.
- They will observe how species have adapted to survive in extreme environments such as highland forests, lowland deserts, beaches, and mangroves.
- Students will analyze the role of biotic and abiotic factors in shaping these ecosystems and sustaining biodiversity.
2. **LS4.C: Adaptation**
- Through hands-on experiences and guided hikes, students will investigate the special adaptations of Galapagos species that help them survive in their unique habitats.
- They will compare and contrast the adaptations of different organisms, such as giant tortoises, marine iguanas, land iguanas, and various bird species, to understand how these adaptations contribute to their survival and reproductive success.
3. **ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems**
- Students will learn about the fragility of island ecosystems and the impact of human activities on these environments.
- They will examine conservation efforts aimed at preserving the biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands and discuss strategies for mitigating human impacts on fragile ecosystems worldwide.
**Science and Engineering Practices:**
1. **Planning and Carrying Out Investigations**
- Students will plan and conduct field investigations, including hikes, snorkeling trips, and visits to educational centers, to collect data on Galapagos ecosystems and species.
- They will use scientific tools and techniques to observe, record, and analyze data related to species diversity, habitat characteristics, and environmental factors.
2. **Analyzing and Interpreting Data**
- Students will analyze data collected during their trip, including observations of species diversity, distribution, and adaptations, to identify patterns and relationships within Galapagos ecosystems.
- They will interpret their findings to develop scientific explanations for the diversity of life on the islands and the mechanisms driving evolutionary change.
**Crosscutting Concepts:**
1. **Patterns**
- Students will identify patterns in the distribution of species across different habitats and islands in the Galapagos archipelago.
- They will recognize similarities and differences in the adaptations of organisms that enable them to survive in similar or contrasting environments.
2. **Stability and Change**
- Students will investigate how environmental changes, both natural and human-induced, affect the stability of island ecosystems and the survival of endemic species.
- They will consider the role of resilience and adaptation in maintaining ecosystem stability in the face of environmental perturbations.
By aligning educational activities and experiences with these NGSS standards, students will gain a deeper understanding of ecological principles, evolutionary processes, and human impacts on biodiversity while exploring the unique ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands.
