Afternoon program: Naturalist Guided Spring Ecology and Wildflower Hike
Learn about Wisconsin’s native “blossoms of snow” that bloom and grow after snowmelt! Early June in Northern WI is prime time for seeing and identifying spring wildflowers as the ground underneath us continues to wake up and thaw. We’ll learn about native flowers such as: trillium, bloodroot, violet, mayapple, anemone, jack-in-the-pulpit, and many more!
Morning program: Bird banding, watching, and ID
Have you ever wondered how scientists track bird migrations, populations, and reproductive rates? We’ll go on an outing with an expert bird bander to catch, identify, and band songbirds using standing nets and learn about how small metal bands on their legs can tell a lot about birds.
Afternoon program: Lake Superior and Waterfall Field Trip
Northern Wisconsin has a handful of stunning waterfalls, especially this time of year because of the recent snowmelt and abundance of water on the landscape. We’ll take a tour and see some incredible geologic features, formations, and even get up close and personal with Lake Superior! In addition to their natural beauty, the waterfalls and scenic overlooks along the southern Lake Superior margin expose rocks that range in age from 1.0 to over 2.2 billion years old. The bedrock is well exposed in many localities due to widespread erosion from the last glacial advance. Field trip stops will show the strong influence of geology on the development of Interstate, Superior, and Potato Falls. An additional overview stop at Corrigan’s Lookout shows glacially scoured pillow lavas erupted in an ancient sea.
Evening program: Northwoods Painting with local artist
You don’t need artistic skills to be an artist! We’ll be guided step-by-step by a local artist who specializes in painting lessons with adults to create a beautiful Northwoods themed painting.
Full day program: Canoe trip
Spring is the time of year when Lake Sturgeon are spawning – and jumping – in lakes and rivers. Come on a canoe trip to the slow-moving Manitowish River where we have the chance to see these prehistoric fish in action and learn about river ecology too! We’re sure to see dragonflies, frogs, turtles, eagles, ospreys, and we might even get lucky enough to spot a river otter looking for lunch.
Morning program: Live animal encounters
Get a private tour of our brand-new nature center from Discovery Center staff that will include a close up with our live reptiles and amphibians! Each of our animals has a story and meeting them in person will make you appreciate Wisconsin wildlife like you never have before.
Participants should plan to eat lunch at NLDC before departing.
